Spiked is an online magazine that is part of what is regarded as a network of pro-corporate libertarians who were affiliated with LM Magazine. It is currently edited by Brendan O’Neill and the ex-Times columnist Mick Hume.
Pro-Smoking
The magazine has a history of its own bloggers as well as known pro-smoking activists publishing articles attacking public health professionals, the smoking ban, the display ban, whilst downplaying the risks of second hand smoke, among other issues. Contributors include:
Against Plain Packaging
In April 2012, Spiked joined Forest‘s Hands Off Our Packs campaign. Brendan O’Neill, the editor of Spiked, said: “Plain packaging is a free speech issue, plain and simple.” 14 To mark the occasion, Spiked ran articles by Chris Snowdon 15 and Patrick Basham 16.
Attending Industry Events
Spiked co-editor Mick Hume was listed as a speaker at the 2012 Global Tobacco Networking Forum, an annual tobacco-industry-funded event now known as the Global Tobacco and Nicotine Forum.17
