Advisor to UK Chancellor in Wake of Lost Personal Data Scandal in 2007
In November 2007, Poynter was appointed advisor to the then UK chancellor Alistair Darling, in the wake of a scandal that saw Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) lose two CDs with personal data of 25 million people.3 Poynter led a seven month investigation that reviewed HMRC procedures, and concluded that there were “serious institutional deficiencies” at HMRC, but that there was “no evidence of misconduct or criminality by any member of the HMRC”.4
