Philip Hammond has been the Conservative Member of Parliament (MP) for Runnymede and Weybridge, England, since May 1997.
Since July 2016, Hammond is the Chancellor of the Exchequer.

Background

Before taking up the role of Chancellor, Hammond served as:1

  • Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs (July 2014-July 2016)
  • Secretary of State for Defence (October 2011-July 2014)
  • Secretary of State for Transport (May 2010-October 2011)
  • Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury (July 2007-May 2010)
  • Shadow Secretary of State for Work and Pensions (December 2005-July 2007)

Relationship with the Tobacco Industry

Accepted Tobacco Hospitality

Hammond has accepted hospitality from Japan Tobacco International (JTI) on several occasions.
In 2013 Hammond declared that “My wife and I were guests of JTI at a dinner at the Berkeley Hotel with the Japanese Ambassador to London and his wife; total value £700.”2
In 2012 he accepted two tickets, and associated hospitality, to the Chelsea Flower Show worth £1,188.3
The year before, in 2011, Hammond had also accepted tickets to the Chelsea Flower Show, worth £1,132.80.4
