Eddy Pirard was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Japan Tobacco International (JTI) in April 2017.1
Pirard succeeded Thomas McCoy, who was JTI’s CEO from December 2013 to March 2017.2
Longstanding Career in Tobacco Industry
Prior to his work in the tobacco industry, Pirard was an Engagement Manager for management consultants McKinsey from 1991-1995. McKinsey has itself a long record of working with the industry. Pirard joined tobacco company Gallaher in 1998 as Head of Business Development.1] He left the tobacco company after a few years to run an e-procurement start-up, but returned to Gallaher in 2002. Since then Pirard has held several leadership positions in Gallaher and JTI (which acquired Gallaher in 2007), including:1
- Executive Vice President for Business Development, Corporate Affairs and Corporate Communications (2014-2017)
- Regional President for Western Europe JTI (2010-2014)
- President UK and Ireland region, JTI (2007-2010)
- Managing Director Other Tobacco Products Division Gallaher (2004-2007)
- Head of Cigar Division, Gallaher (2002-2004)
Led JTI’s Acquisition of E-cigarette Companies
Pirard was responsible for JTI’s acquisition of e-cigarette companies Zandera (E-Lites) in 20143 and Logic in 2015.45
